I’m out in the sun as much as possible, and I love wearing tops and dresses that show a little skin. But being out in the sun and hot weather requires doing a little extra to keep my skin soft, smooth and safe. My favorite time of year is also the time when I step up my skin care game: following just a few quick tips on summer skin care will keep you glowing throughout the season.

Practice Safe Sun

Skin care experts have long believed that sunscreen is a must, even if the sky is overcast. Luckily, choosing products that give you the right amount of protection has become easier because many products ranging from lotion to makeup now have sunblock. But not all sunblocks are created equal; make sure your products protect against both UVA and UVB rays. For a day out in the sun or on the beach, double check your sunscreen to make sure it’s either water-resistant or waterproof. The difference is that water-resistant sunscreen lasts about 40 minutes, while waterproof lasts at least 80 minutes. And if you’re planning to tan – or if you’re getting a head start on summer by visiting tanning salons – be aware that the same safety rules apply for tanning lamps as for the natural sun.

Moisture Is Your Friend

Sun and wind are your skin’s worst enemies during any season, but summer adds a new element to the mix. Showing a little more skin when the weather is warm means that there’s more skin that needs to be protected and moisturized. The majority of drugstore lotions and body creams use mineral oil as a main ingredient, which is a byproduct of petroleum. Mineral oil doesn’t get absorbed into your skin-instead, it just sits on top. After a hot day in the sun, you don’t want your skin to feel like an oil slick, do you? Use a body moisturizer that’s made with natural oils for deeper, longer-lasting moisture.

Lighten Up Your Makeup

I’m not referring just to colors – use lighter foundations and powders, if you can. This will keep your skin’s pores from clogging when the heat causes you to perspire. There are some wonderful and affordable tinted moisturizers available that give both coverage and moisture, and many of them contain sunscreen as well. Finally, take care of your lips with a good gloss or lipstick that contains sunscreen of at least SPF 25 – the skin on your lips needs as much attention as the rest of your body.

Great skin takes work and experimentation. Not every product will work with your skin type, so don’t be afraid to switch it up and try something new. And remember: great skin doesn’t have to be expensive. Look for brands and products that give you the most bang for your buck, and that can last you through the season. Plus sized women face plenty of discrimination all the time but when we’re pregnant, the fun takes on a whole new form. When we are suffering from pregnancy signs and symptoms, it is perhaps not the comments from “concerned” relatives, friends, and even random strangers that are most hurtful – it is our healthcare providers that take the crown.

Are you pregnant, or trying to conceive? Women who have gone before you have had the pleasure of receiving comments like these from their obstetricians or midwives [1]:

It’s lovely, isn’t it, how all those usual prejudices creep into maternity care? These are not really the kind of comments we expect from our doctors, yet they come up very frequently. Perhaps it is time for us to teach our healthcare providers a lesson, and counter those assumptions you find right there in those comments – who are they to assume that you are lazy, don’t exercise, eat Big Macs, and that they don’t need to treat you like a human just because you are plus sized?

What can you do if you meet one of these prejudices in your doctor’s office? Besides finding another doctor as soon as you can – one who will respect you – you might find that humor is the best way of dealing with folks like these. It’s not good going into a pregnancy this obese? “Well, it’s all my fault for not having had two thin parents. Perhaps I should just not carry on your bad genes at all?” If you are told to “sort out your exercises”, tell your doctor to “sort out their manners”. If you are told you don’t want to be a mom who can’t run after her kids, maybe your doctor should hear that she doesn’t want to be that mom who passes bad manners onto hers.

Size discrimination takes on a whole new level when we are expecting a baby. But remember, you should not have to deal with rudeness just because you are carrying a new human inside your uterus, even when the rudeness comes under the guise of medical care.

Plus Size Product Review: Delta Burke® Swimsuit Swimsuitsforall.com

Swimsuitsforall.com was kind enough to send a free plus size swimsuit for my review. I chose the Mayan Mosaique Scoop Neck Swimsuit by Delta Burke® because I’ve always wanted to try a Delta Burke® swimsuit and I loved the pattern and color combination of the swimsuit. I was surprised by the quality of the swimsuit, the fit, and the fabric.

On first look at the Mayan Mosaique Scoop Neck Swimsuit by Delta Burke® it appeared to be a very well made swimsuit. There is a vivid graphic pattern with brighter colors at top and darker, slimming colors from the bust down. The suit is flattering, brighter colors make the upper neck and chest area a focus while the dark patterned suit at the bottom flatters curvier figures. The background color of the suit is a dark navy blue. The graphic patterns use a light blue and navy blue mixed with a bright lime green at the bust, with a lighter blue mixed with navy blue pattern from the bust down and from the back of the suit down. The lime green color is actually more vivid than the photo, very pretty and the pattern is very flattering for curvy shapes. The fabric is a little heavier than most swimsuits which I prefer, and the fabric is plenty stretchy providing a very comfortable fit.

The swimsuit turned out to be a perfect fit when I tried it on. I went up a size because the Delta Burke® swimsuit measurements were smaller than usual for my size. I would recommend checking the sizing for Delta Burke® suits and consider going up one size when ordering. The only thing I did notice about the suit is that it seems slightly tighter under the arms for fit, but still this is barely snug with plenty of room to move, so it’s really no problem. The bra shelf fits wonderfully as do the shoulder straps. The swimsuit bra goes up to size D/DD, and is a different size than I wear. When I tried on the suit the bra fit as if it had been made for me.

This is a perfect fitting swimsuit, and definitely the best swimsuit I’ve ever owned. I’m very impressed with the quality, style, fabric, and fit of this swimsuit. The Mayan Mosaique Scoop Neck Swimsuit by Delta Burke® is on sale and priced at $78.00 at Swimsuitsforall.com.
