He finally asked you to meet for a drink. You’ve already done your happy dance and told your best friend. Now you need to decide what you’re going to wear. This is a huge decision for any woman but for a plus-sized woman it can be especially difficult. We’re already insecure about our bodies, add first-date pressure on top of that and we might decide to stay home in our pjs instead. What’s the perfect outfit to wear for your date?
You want to feel confident: Before you go to the mall, think about what styles you look the best wearing. What colors get you the most compliments? You may want to get your best friend or sister on the phone to help you with this. If you wear an outfit that you know you look great in, that confidence will show. You’ll smile more and he will notice.
You want to be comfortable: If you’re thinking about the fact that your waistband is slicing through your spine, you won’t be focused on him. If you’re worried that your neckline might be cut too low, you’ll be distracted by it. You’ll come across as uncomfortable which he will interpret to mean you’re not having a good time. Men get insecure too: if you’re fidgeting, you appear restless, restless can be interpreted as bored and he’ll blame himself.
You want to dress right: You want to choose an outfit that is appropriate to the place you’re going on your date. If you’re meeting at a local bar or coffee shop, then a cute top with capri pants from Lane Bryant is perfect. If he’s taking you to a nice restaurant, then a little black dress from Jessica London will work.
Note: If you’re unsure, you can check customer reviews of the place online. If the reviewers use words like casual and fun, you know you can dress down. If the reviews all mention being there on a special occasion, dress nicer.
You want to keep the conversation going: Do you have a necklace you bought on a trip? Or a ring your grandmother gave you? Wearing jewelry serves two purposes: it will give you something to subtly play will and it will draw a compliment from him. When he compliments your necklace, you can tell him about your trip. If you don’t have an accessory that has a story, give your best friend $10 and send her to the mall. Then you can talk about your friend and the scarf she gave you.
The most important advice: Don’t get so worried about your clothes that you forget to have fun. No man ever got home from date and described his date’s outfit to his roommate. He might remember that your shirt was green because it matched your eyes, but only if he’s super-observant. He will remember your gorgeous smile and great laugh. He’ll remember that you two talked until the restaurant closed. He’ll remember that you looked pretty and that he liked you. He’ll remember that he wants to see you again soon.
